Any talk about hair and since watching it, always takes me back to that scene from Fleabag (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKZMCuppTeo) . I watched it again after reading this! Haha! After each haircut or adventure with my own hair (including the recent jumping into a tub of blue!) I always tell myself, it will all grow out man!
Oh man, I'm sorry some nasty drunken shitbag punched you in the face. And I'm sorry your haircut made you feel a bit lost and rudderless. I think you're 100% right that your reaction to both is somehow about attachment. Perhaps to a sense of safety on the one hand, a belief that you can go about the world without danger, and to your sense of self on the other, your idea of how you perceive yourself as opposed to how you are seen by others.
I've never practiced a martial art that could be in any way described as effective, but I am led to believe that in such dojos, they do a lot of pressure testing: drilling techniques under realistic fighting conditions until you're no longer surprised by aggression or pain, and no longer shocked when someone visits violence upon you. To me it sounds like a quick and effective way to shed layers of pride and ego and manufactured perception of oneself. It sounds like a great practice (although no way am I stepping into a roughty-toughty dojo at my age!).
I'm glad that you could experience something vaguely along that line of realisation by getting a too-drastic haircut and being aghast at your own reflection. May the Edifice of the Self tumble! May we all learn to live in the world without attachment to the ephemeral! (And in the meantime may you treat yourself with the compassion you deserve when your thoughts inevitably drift back to your assault.)
